Dutch Oven Comparison

I baked two boules in two different Dutch ovens.  They were from the same batch of dough, baked in the same oven at the same time. One was baked in a Staub 2.75 quart enameled Dutch oven, the other in a Lodge Combo Cooker. Can you tell the difference?  I can’t. The Staub costs between $150.00 and $200.00.  The Lodge costs around $50.00.

The one on the right was baked in the Lodge.

  1. I was going to say that the one on the right had more browning, so i suspected the cast iron. It also opened more on the score lines. O maybe that was just the way it was scored.

  2. The one on the right looks a little larger. I bake with a cast iron Dutch oven that is likely an antique. It came with a bail handle which I removed for convenience and to make it less likely that I accidentally burn myself. I have enamel Dutch ovens, but find that the baking seems to affect the enamel somewhat.
